  • Protecting the Rio Motagua Watershed
    Guatemala – Massive erosion is carrying tons of fertile soil into the Rio Motagua, the most important river of Guatemala.

  • Drought Mitigation
    Honduras – Farmers using new practices of soil and water conservation are still producing crops during this summer of drought.

  • Hurricane Mitch Reconstruction
    HondurasLa Semilla del Progreso is training farmer/leaders to restore small hillside family farms eroded by torrential rains.

  • Gilbert White Biography
    Boulder, CO USA – Geographer Gilbert White is the globally recognized father of the interdisciplinary study of the interface between natural hazards and human actions, particularly with respect to water.

 

Peace

  • Healing the Wounds of War
    Bosnia – The Bosnian Children's Art & Writing Project uses art and psychotherapy for healing children who have grown up in war zones.

  • Non-Violence Internships
    Santa Cruz, CA USA – Two university students spend the summer learning about organizational development for non-violent social change.

  • Mennonite Peace Council Delegate
    Guatemala – Summer intern experiences life in post-Peace Accords Guatemala and serves as a delegate to the Mennonite World Conference Peace Council.

Human Rights

  • Creation of Maya Cultural Center
    Guatemala – Mayan leaders are creating a center dedicated to the preservation of the Mayan culture and programs of cultural interpretation.

  • Peace Scholarship Recipient
    El Salvador – Gloria de Rivera, Director of the Assn for the Promotion of the Human Rights of Salvadoran Children, attends the 2000 Int'l Summer School for Peacemakers in Corrymeela, Northern Ireland.

  • Legal Defense in Human Rights Case
    Bolivia – Educator of deaf children is provided legal defense in high profile Bolivian court case.

 

Sustainable Development

  • Agricultural Training Center Rebuilt
    Honduras – Totally washed away by Hurricane Mitch, the Loma Linda Training Center is rebuilt on higher ground.

  • Mayan Foundation Builds Indigenous Leadership
    Guatemala – Fundacion Agri-Cultura Marcos Orozco is a Mayan administered grassroots organization dedicated to preserving Guatemala's environmental and cultural resources.

  • Training Health Care Workers
    Benin, West Africa – Educational materials are provided for the training of 43 primary health care workers for rural villages.

  • Preventative Health Care
    Guatemala – In the watershed of theRio Motagua Mayan women want to compliment the work of the men in soil and water conservation with preventative health care education.
